The Wildlife of Sosian

Sosian is located on the Laikipia plateau in central Kenya.  It supports a wide diversity of African wildlife and birds, including 70 species of mammal and over 300 species of birds.

Sosian has a number of rare and endemic species, such as the Jackson's hartebeest, Grevy's zebra (80% of the population is found in Laikipia), and reticulated giraffe. Even endangered wild dogs, thought to be extinct in Laikipia, have returned to the area in healthy numbers and are occasionally seen on Sosian.

This site is dedicated to the wildlife of Sosian.  In these pages you can learn about the wildlife that lives here in Portraits of Sosian Wildlife, including biology, folk tales inspired by the animals, and first-hand stories of encounters.  You can also learn about the Ecology of Sosian and Conservation initiatives taking place here and in Laikipia.
